Psychological Frameworks

Our psychologists and therapists draw from a variety of evidence based counselling frameworks and theories when working with clients. Learn more about the many different frameworks and theories our therapist use in their work with clients.

Gottman Method Couples Therapy Calgary

Gottman Method

The Gottman Method is backed by 40 years of research on 3,000+ couples. This approach identifies destructive patterns (criticism, contempt, defensiveness, stonewalling) and teaches practical skills to build friendship, manage conflict, and create shared meaning.
internal family systems therapy calgary

Internal Family Systems

IFS therapy recognizes that our minds contain multiple “parts”—each with different roles and perspectives. This evidence-based approach helps you understand and heal internal conflicts, especially effective for trauma, depression, and anxiety.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Calgary

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

ACT brings a fresh perspective to mental health treatment. Rather than fighting difficult thoughts and feelings, ACT helps you accept them while taking action toward what truly matters in your life.
Mindfulness Based Therapy Calgary

Mindfulness Based Therapy

Mindfulness-based therapy combines traditional therapeutic techniques with meditation and present-moment awareness. This scientifically-proven approach helps you manage stress, anxiety, and depression while developing better emotional regulation and self-awareness.
EMDR Therapy Calgary

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy

EMDR helps your brain process traumatic memories that feel “stuck.” Using bilateral stimulation, this therapy reduces the emotional intensity of disturbing memories without making you forget what happened—just making it less overwhelming.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Isomnia Calgary

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)

CBT-I is the most effective non-medication treatment for insomnia. This specialized approach addresses the thoughts, behaviors, and habits that disrupt your sleep, helping you achieve restful nights without relying on pills.
Feminist Therapy Calgary

Feminist Therapy

Feminist therapy addresses how gender inequality, discrimination, and power imbalances affect mental health. This approach recognizes that personal struggles often reflect broader societal issues and empowers clients to challenge oppressive systems.
Person Centered Therapy and Counselling Calgary

Person Centered Therapy

Person-centered therapy, developed by Carl Rogers, places you at the center of your healing journey. In a non-judgmental, empathetic environment, you explore your feelings and find your own solutions with unconditional support.
Culturally Sensitive Therapy in Calgary

Culturally Sensitive Therapy

Culturally sensitive therapy honors your unique cultural identity, values, and experiences. This approach recognizes that culture shapes mental health and ensures therapy respects your background, beliefs, and worldview throughout the healing process.
Strength Based Therapy Calgary

Strength Based Therapy

Strength-based therapy shifts focus from problems to possibilities. By identifying and building on your existing strengths, resources, and resilience, this approach empowers you to create positive change from a foundation of capability.
Emotionally Focused Therapy Calgary

Emotionally Focused Therapy

EFT strengthens emotional bonds in relationships by addressing attachment needs. Developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, this approach helps couples identify negative interaction patterns and create deeper, more secure emotional connections.
Prolonged Exposure Therapy Calgary

Prolonged Exposure Therapy

Prolonged Exposure Therapy is a proven PTSD treatment that helps you safely confront traumatic memories you’ve been avoiding. Through gradual, controlled exposure, you process these experiences and reduce their emotional power over your life.
Cognitive Processing Therapy Calgary

Cognitive Processing Therapy

CPT is a proven treatment for trauma and PTSD. This structured approach helps you process traumatic experiences, challenge unhelpful beliefs about what happened, and reduce symptoms like flashbacks, nightmares, and avoidance.
Motivational Interviewing Calgary

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing strengthens your own motivation for change rather than telling you what to do. This collaborative approach explores your ambivalence, resolves internal conflicts, and helps you commit to meaningful behavioral changes.
Interpersonal Psychotherapy Calgary

Interpersonal Psychotherapy

IPT is a structured, time-limited therapy (12-16 sessions) focused on relationship issues that affect mental health. It addresses grief, role transitions, conflicts, and interpersonal difficulties to reduce depression and improve connections.
Attachment Based Therapy Calgary

Attachment Based Therapy

Attachment-based therapy explores how early relationships shape your current connections. By understanding your attachment patterns—formed in childhood—you can build healthier, more secure relationships with partners, family, and others.
Dialectical Behavioural Therapy DBT Calgary

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

DBT combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness and acceptance strategies. Originally developed for borderline personality disorder, DBT now effectively treats emotional dysregulation, self-harm, and intense relationship struggles through practical skill-building.
Family Systems Therapy Calgary

Family Systems Therapy

Family systems therapy views your family as an interconnected system where each member’s behavior affects everyone else. This approach addresses family dynamics, communication patterns, and roles to create healthier relationships for all.
Narrative Therapy Calgary

Narrative Therapy

Narrative therapy explores the stories you tell about your life and identity. By examining and rewriting these narratives, you gain agency over your story, separate yourself from problems, and create new possibilities.
Psychodynamic Therapy Calgary

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapy explores how unconscious processes and past experiences shape your current patterns. Rooted in Freudian theory but modernized, this approach helps you understand hidden motivations and resolve long-standing emotional conflicts.
Solution Focused Therapy Calgary

Solution Focused Therapy

Solution-Focused Therapy focuses on solutions rather than problems. This brief, goal-oriented approach helps you identify your strengths, envision your preferred future, and take practical steps toward positive change—often in fewer sessions.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Calgary

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is the gold standard for treating anxiety, depression, and many mental health challenges. This evidence-based approach helps you identify negative thought patterns and develop practical coping strategies for lasting change.

What Types of Therapy Calgary Residents Can Access at Our Clinic?

Our Calgary psychology and counselling services include a wide range of therapeutic approaches. While Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is commonly used, our therapists are trained in multiple frameworks including EMDR, DBT, solution-focused therapy, and mindfulness-based interventions. Most of our practitioners take an eclectic approach, selecting techniques that work best for each individual client rather than sticking to one method.

We provide individual counselling for adults, seniors, men, women, and LGBTQ+ individuals, as well as child and youth therapy. Our Calgary therapy services address anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship issues, and many other mental health concerns.

Do You Provide Grief Counselling Calgary Residents Need?

Absolutely. We understand that grief counselling Calgary families require during difficult times is deeply personal and sensitive. Our therapists are specially trained to support individuals and families through loss, whether from death, divorce, job loss, or other significant life changes. We offer both individual and group grief counselling options to meet different comfort levels and needs.

How Do I Find Qualified Calgary Psychologists and Therapists?

Our team of Calgary psychologists and therapists all hold, at minimum, a Master’s degree in psychology, counselling, or a related field. Many are Registered Psychologists or Provisional Registered Psychologists licensed with the College of Alberta Psychologists. Others are Canadian Certified Counsellors registered with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.

When choosing a therapist, consider their specializations, approach, and whether you feel comfortable with them during your free consultation. All our practitioners’ detailed credentials and specialties are listed on their individual bio pages.

Do Your Therapists Provide Services in Multiple Languages?

Yes! We have several multilingual therapists on our team who can provide therapy in languages other than English. This helps ensure that language barriers don’t prevent anyone from accessing quality mental health care. Check our team page to see which languages each therapist speaks, or contact us to discuss your specific language needs.

Do You Provide Direct Billing for Calgary Psychology and Counselling Services?

We offer direct billing whenever possible, though availability depends on your insurance provider and your therapist’s credentials. Most insurance companies allow direct billing with our Registered Psychologists. For Provisional Psychologists, we can typically direct bill with Alberta Blue Cross, Medavie Blue Cross, Greenshield, and Sunlife.

For psychoeducational assessments and other testing services, we can often provide direct billing but it depends on your policy and insurer.

Where Are Your Calgary Therapy Locations?

We provide therapy services at our Southwest Calgary office which is located across from Mount Royal University, near where Crowchild Trail meets Glenmore Trail. Our location has free parking and windowed office.

Do You Offer Telehealth or Online Counselling Throughout Alberta?

Yes! We provide secure online video and phone counselling sessions for clients throughout Calgary, Alberta, and Ontario. Many of our therapists work both in-person and online, while some specialize exclusively in virtual therapy. Online counselling can be just as effective as in-person sessions for many concerns, and it offers greater flexibility for busy schedules or those who prefer the comfort of their own space.

How Do I Schedule a Session with Calgary Psychologists or Counsellors?

We strongly recommend starting with our free consultation option. This gives you a chance to meet your potential therapist, ask questions, and ensure you feel comfortable before committing to paid sessions. During this consultation, you can discuss your concerns and treatment goals.

If you’re ready to book directly, simply text us your first name, last name, and email address, or use our online contact form. We’ll set you up in our booking system, send you intake forms to complete, and schedule your first appointment once everything is ready.

Can I See a Calgary Psychologist or Counsellor Right Away?

While same-day appointments are rare, we do our best to accommodate urgent needs when possible. We’re not a crisis center, so if you’re experiencing a mental health emergency, please contact the Distress Centre or emergency services immediately.

That said, we sometimes have last-minute openings due to cancellations. The main factor affecting how quickly we can see you is completing your intake forms promptly. Once these are submitted, we can often schedule you within a few days to a week.

How Many Counselling Sessions Will I Need?

This varies significantly from person to person and depends on your specific concerns, goals, and personal circumstances. Some clients see improvement in just a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term therapy. Our goal is to provide you with tools and insights that help you manage challenges independently, so you won’t need therapy indefinitely.

During your initial sessions, your therapist will work with you to establish realistic goals and provide an estimate of the expected treatment timeline based on your unique situation.

How Many Counselling Sessions Will It Take?

We frequently get asked questions about how long it will take to see improvements. This is a really difficult question to answer and depends more on the client, the issues they are dealing with, and where they are at in their life than the therapist. Our main goal is to help educate our clients and provide them with the tools so that they can improve their lives and move beyond therapy.

Is Online Counselling as Effective as In-Person Therapy?

Online counselling can be extremely effective for many mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, and trauma. However, effectiveness depends on several factors. Young children typically respond better to in-person sessions due to engagement challenges with technology. Individuals dealing with severe mental health crises may also benefit more from face-to-face interaction.

For most adults dealing with common mental health concerns, online therapy offers the same therapeutic benefits as in-person sessions, with added convenience and accessibility.

Do You Offer Psychoeducational Assessments and Other Psychological Testing?

Yes! We provide various assessment services for both adults and children, including psychoeducational assessments, ADHD evaluations, and cognitive assessments (IQ testing). All assessments are conducted by College of Alberta Registered Psychologists who specialize in psychological testing.

These assessments can help identify learning differences, attention difficulties, cognitive strengths and challenges, and provide recommendations for academic or workplace accommodations. Check our pricing page for detailed information about costs and what each assessment includes.

Do You Offer Sliding-Scale Fees for Calgary Psychology and Counselling Services?

Unfortunately, we don’t currently offer sliding-scale fees. However, we do accept most major insurance plans and provide direct billing where possible to help make our services more accessible. Our current fee structure is available on our pricing page, and we’re happy to discuss payment options during your consultation.

What Should I Do If I’m Having a Mental Health Crisis in Calgary?

If you’re experiencing a mental health emergency, please contact emergency services (911) immediately. For non-emergency crisis support, the Calgary Distress Centre provides 24/7 phone support at 403-266-4357. They also offer text and chat support options.

Our clinic provides ongoing therapy and support but is not equipped for crisis intervention. We’re here to help you develop coping strategies and work through challenges during scheduled appointments.

How Do I Know If Therapy Is Right for Me?

Therapy can benefit anyone looking to improve their mental health, relationships, or overall well-being. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from counselling. Many people seek therapy for personal growth, stress management, relationship improvement, or to develop better coping strategies.

If you’re unsure whether therapy would help, our free consultation is a perfect opportunity to discuss your concerns with a professional and learn how counselling might support your goals.
