Sheri Boyd, Provisional Registered Psychologist

Hi, I’m Sheri.

I believe good therapy should feel human. My approach is warm, practical, collaborative, and direct when it needs to be. I want clients to feel comfortable enough to talk honestly about what is happening in their lives without worrying about being judged. Therapy can involve difficult conversations, but there is also room for humour, perspective, and recognizing the strengths you may have lost sight of along the way.

I work with teens and adults in individual counselling, as well as adults seeking couples counselling. I support clients experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, stress and burnout, self-esteem concerns, emotional regulation difficulties, ADHD, relationship conflict, anger, life transitions, and other situations that can leave people feeling overwhelmed or stuck.

Trauma can affect the way we understand ourselves, our relationships, and the world around us. I use trauma-informed approaches and am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), along with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), attachment-based approaches, narrative therapy, and DBT-informed skills. Rather than forcing therapy into a single model, I draw from different approaches to create a treatment plan that fits the person in front of me.

I also work with individuals navigating difficult or emotionally harmful relationship dynamics, including relationships involving narcissistic traits, manipulation, chronic conflict, or emotional abuse. These experiences can leave people questioning their perceptions, boundaries, confidence, and sense of self. Therapy can provide a place to make sense of confusing patterns, strengthen boundaries, rebuild trust in yourself, and explore what healthier relationships can look like moving forward.

Couples work is another important part of my practice. I have completed Levels 1 and 2 of Gottman Method Couples Therapy, along with additional Gottman training related to affairs and trauma, becoming parents, and strengthening marriage. I help couples explore recurring conflict, communication difficulties, trust, emotional connection, attachment, and the patterns that can keep partners feeling disconnected. My role is not to decide who is right or wrong, but to help both partners understand what is happening between them and work toward healthier ways of relating.

I have significant experience working with teens, including adolescents dealing with anxiety, depression, emotional and behavioural challenges, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and high-conflict family dynamics. Teenagers do not always arrive in therapy because it was their idea, so building trust matters. I work to meet teens where they are, understand what is happening beneath the behaviour, and create a therapeutic relationship where meaningful work can actually happen.

Before becoming a psychologist, my education and career took me through both science and business. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Biopsychology and an MBA in Marketing in addition to my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology. That broader life and professional experience influences the way I understand career pressure, competing responsibilities, relationships, parenting, identity, and the realities of trying to make change while still managing everyday life.

At Best Choice, I offer in-person counselling at both our South and North Calgary offices, as well as online video counselling.
