Hi, I’m Murray.
After more than 35 years in counselling and mental health, very little about people’s lives surprises me. People come to therapy carrying all kinds of things—relationships that have become difficult, losses they have struggled to move through, anxiety or depression that keeps returning, trauma that still affects the present, anger they do not fully understand, work that has consumed too much of their life, or simply the realization that something needs to change.
I work with adults in individual and couples counselling. My style is calm, practical, collaborative, and grounded in decades of experience. I believe the relationship between therapist and client matters enormously. You should be able to speak openly, feel respected, and know that the person sitting across from you is genuinely trying to understand your situation rather than forcing it into a predetermined explanation.
I don’t believe good therapy begins by reducing someone to a diagnosis. Understanding symptoms and patterns can be important, but the larger questions are what is happening in your life, what has contributed to it, and what would help things become better. People rarely fit neatly into boxes. My role is to understand the whole person, help make sense of what is happening, and work with you toward meaningful change.
In individual counselling, I work with adults experiencing concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, grief and loss, anger, relationship difficulties, work-related stress, abuse and difficult past experiences, and major life transitions. Sometimes there is one clear problem. Other times several parts of life have become tangled together. After decades in mental health, I am comfortable working with complexity and helping clients determine where it makes sense to begin.
My work with couples focuses on helping partners understand what is happening between them and find more constructive ways of responding to one another. Couples may come to therapy because of recurring conflict, communication difficulties, loss of trust, emotional distance, intimacy concerns, major transitions, or simply the sense that their relationship is no longer working the way it once did. I help couples slow down the patterns that keep repeating, hear one another more clearly, and identify practical changes that can strengthen the relationship.
My broader professional background includes many years in hospital and community mental health, social work, crisis intervention, psychological assessment, and family mediation. Although Best Choice does not offer mediation through my practice, that experience has given me a broad perspective on conflict, family relationships, difficult decisions, and the many pressures that can affect people’s lives. I also spent 12 years working within Alberta Health Services, where my responsibilities included assessment, diagnosis, treatment, professional collaboration, and coordination of care.
I draw from a range of therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, emotion-focused therapy, Gestalt therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, exposure therapy, mindfulness-based strategies, psychoeducation, and other interventions selected according to the needs of the person or couple. Some clients benefit from practical strategies and focused problem-solving; others need more space to understand emotions, patterns, avoidance, or experiences that continue to shape the present. I am less interested in making a client fit a particular therapy model than in finding an approach that is understandable, useful, and relevant to the change they want to make.
Substance use can sometimes be part of a more complicated picture involving trauma, depression, anxiety, anger, relationship strain, or other difficulties. I am comfortable addressing these concerns when they arise as part of therapy, while keeping the focus on the broader goals that brought you to counselling.
I offer in-person appointments from my office at 317 37 Ave NE in Calgary, as well as online video counselling.
Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) Mental Health Assessments
In addition to counselling, I provide mental health assessments for Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC). My extensive clinical background allows me to approach these assessments with an understanding of complex and overlapping concerns, including trauma and PTSD, depression, anxiety, anger, relationship strain, and substance use when it is part of the clinical picture.
Military service and the transition to civilian life can involve experiences and challenges that do not always fit neatly into a single category. My goal is to approach the assessment process carefully and respectfully, considering the whole person and the ways their experiences are affecting daily life, relationships, and psychological wellbeing.
