Amy Wu, R. Psych
I am a Registered Psychologist who believes that therapy is not about changing who you are. It is about helping you better understand yourself, make sense of difficult experiences, and develop the insight and skills needed to move forward in ways that feel meaningful to you.
My style is warm, curious, collaborative, and practical. I work with adults in individual and couples counselling, supporting concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, stress and burnout, self-esteem, relationship difficulties, boundaries, work-life balance, grief, and major life transitions. I also have experience supporting clients following motor vehicle accidents and understand that recovery can involve emotional and psychological challenges as well as changes to everyday life.
I am especially interested in what may be happening underneath recurring emotional and behavioural patterns. Sometimes we know that a reaction, belief, or relationship pattern is no longer helping us, but still find ourselves returning to it. Therapy can provide a space to understand where those patterns came from, how they continue to affect you, and what may help you develop greater freedom and choice in how you respond.
I draw from evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness-based approaches, trauma-informed therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). I have completed EMDR Basic Training and may integrate EMDR when trauma or distressing past experiences are contributing to current difficulties. I tailor therapy to the individual rather than assuming that one approach will fit everyone.
For couples, I bring the same collaborative and individualized approach to understanding relationship patterns, communication, conflict, boundaries, and the experiences that may be shaping how partners respond to one another. My goal is to create a respectful space where both partners can feel heard while working toward healthier ways of communicating and relating.
My professional background includes psychological practice, family support, developmental-disability services, crisis intervention, and support for people affected by sexual assault and trauma. These experiences have strengthened my belief that people are capable of meaningful change, even when they have felt stuck in the same patterns for a long time.
I understand that reaching out for therapy can be difficult, particularly when you have been managing things on your own for a long time. I strive to create a safe, compassionate, and nonjudgmental environment where you can explore your experiences at your own pace. Together, we can build on your strengths, develop practical strategies, and work toward greater confidence, resilience, and emotional wellbeing.
I provide counselling in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese. At Best Choice, I offer in-person appointments at our North Calgary office, as well as online video counselling.
