Calgary Counsellor - Jarret Verwimp
Canadian Certified Counsellor P.Geo

Hi, I’m Jarret.

I’m a Canadian Certified Counsellor who works with adults and couples who want more than a temporary reduction in symptoms. Practical tools matter, but I’m also interested in understanding what is happening underneath the problem: the emotions we have learned to avoid, the stories we carry about ourselves, and the relationship patterns that can keep repeating even when we understand intellectually that they are not working.

My approach combines emotional depth with practical change. Therapy should give you room to slow down and understand what you are actually feeling, while also helping you build skills and make changes outside the therapy room. I tend to be curious, collaborative, and direct. I don’t believe in forcing people into a cookie-cutter model of therapy, so we’ll work together to understand what fits you and what actually helps.

A significant part of my practice is relationship and couples counselling. I have completed Levels 1 and 2 of Gottman Method Couples Therapy and combine its research-informed tools with attention to the emotions and deeper patterns underneath recurring conflict. I work with couples dealing with communication problems, emotional disconnection, intimacy and sexual concerns, infidelity, recurring arguments, trust, and major relationship transitions. Sometimes couples know exactly what they are fighting about; other times the argument on the surface is only a small part of what is happening underneath. I help partners understand both.

I also work with adults around sexuality, intimacy, and relationships. My practice is sex-positive and kink-friendly, and I welcome clients in consensually non-monogamous and polyamorous relationships. These parts of life can be difficult to discuss when people expect judgment, assumptions, or embarrassment. My goal is to provide a matter-of-fact and respectful space where clients can talk openly about sex, desire, intimacy, relationship structures, and concerns that may be affecting their wellbeing or relationships.

ADHD is another important focus of my work. Adults with ADHD often arrive with years of frustration, shame, inconsistent performance, relationship strain, or the feeling that things that seem easy for other people require enormous effort. I work with clients to understand how ADHD is affecting their particular life and relationships, develop practical strategies, and challenge the self-critical stories that can accumulate after years of struggling.

Sleep is closely connected to nearly every part of psychological wellbeing, and sleep problems are another area I particularly enjoy working with. When sleep becomes difficult, people can find themselves caught in cycles of exhaustion, anxiety, frustration, and increasingly desperate attempts to make themselves sleep. Therapy can help identify the behavioural, emotional, and cognitive patterns that are keeping that cycle going and build healthier conditions for sleep.

My work is also trauma-informed. Difficult experiences can continue to shape our emotions, relationships, behaviour, and beliefs about ourselves long after the original experience has passed. I help clients approach those patterns with curiosity rather than shame and work toward integrating emotional understanding with concrete changes in the present.

Before becoming a counsellor, I took a fairly unconventional route through geology, art, technology, and entrepreneurship. I’ve built businesses, worked in different industries, gone back to school more than once, and I’m also a dad. Those experiences influence how I approach therapy: people are complicated, lives rarely unfold according to plan, and meaningful change usually requires more than repeating advice someone already understands.

I provide counselling in English and French, with basic Spanish. At Best Choice, I offer in-person appointments at both our South and North Calgary offices, as well as online video counselling.
