Lyle Gaskell, R. Psych
Hi, I’m Lyle.
People often come to therapy because something that once helped them cope is no longer working. You may be dealing with anxiety or depression that keeps returning, the lasting effects of trauma, stress that has begun to affect your health and relationships, or patterns in a relationship or family that seem difficult to change. My goal is to help you understand the whole picture rather than reduce what you are experiencing to a single symptom or diagnosis.
I am a Registered Psychologist with 12 years of practice experience, and my work has taken me across private practice, community mental health, trauma-informed programs, Indigenous community services, and work with individuals, couples, and families. I work from a holistic and integrative perspective. Mental health does not exist separately from the body, relationships, family, culture, community, and the experiences that have shaped us. Therapy can be most useful when we make room for all of those parts of a person’s life.
Couples therapy is an important part of my work. Relationships can become strained by recurring disagreements, communication difficulties, emotional distance, or patterns that leave both partners feeling misunderstood. I help couples explore what happens beneath these patterns, recognize each person’s experiences and needs, and find more constructive ways to connect and respond to one another. My approach is collaborative and practical, with attention to the emotional and relational dynamics that shape how couples relate.
My approach draws from evidence-based and relationship-focused therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), attachment-based therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, trauma-focused approaches, and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART). I also use body-based and holistic strategies when they are helpful for understanding and reducing stress. I do not expect every client to fit one model. We can decide together what approach makes sense for you and adjust our work as your needs change.
Alongside couples therapy, I work with individuals and families navigating trauma and PTSD, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, stress, parenting challenges, family conflict, and major life transitions. Difficult experiences can affect mood, behaviour, relationships, and a person’s sense of safety. I take time to understand how these concerns fit together rather than treating each difficulty in isolation. When substance use or addictive behaviour is part of a broader clinical picture, I approach it in the context of the person’s wellbeing and goals.
I also enjoy working with people across different stages of life and with a wide range of backgrounds and identities. My experience includes teens, adults, older adults, couples, families, and LGBTQ2+ clients. I have worked with concerns including ADHD and neurodiversity, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, grief, self-esteem, men’s issues, parenting, relationship difficulties, and major life transitions. When a concern is complex or overlaps with other parts of life, I am comfortable taking the time to understand how the pieces fit together.
A significant part of my professional life has been spent in Indigenous community settings. I currently work with Miskanawah’s Healing Lodge, supporting clients in personal and cultural recovery, and earlier in my career I coordinated Indigenous youth cultural programming in Calgary. These experiences have deepened my appreciation for the roles that culture, identity, community, spirituality, and intergenerational experiences can play in wellbeing. When those dimensions matter to a client, there is room to explore them; I do not assume they should define anyone’s therapy.
I believe people are capable of meaningful growth even when life has become painful or complicated. Therapy should be a place where you can speak honestly, understand what is happening, and find practical ways forward while still being treated as a whole person. My role is to bring experience, psychological knowledge, curiosity, and respect to that process and to work alongside you toward changes that make sense in your life.
