Calgary Counsellor - Jarret Verwimp

Welcome! I’m Jarret, a Canadian Certified Counsellor who has a passion for empowering people who want to take charge of their lives. I’ve travelled to many parts of the world and approach diverse cultures and lifestyles with a sense of curiosity and humbleness. In my life, I have always searched for truth and have a unique understanding of the human condition, religion, and spirituality which helps me connect with a wide range of people.

I approach therapy from a trauma-informed lens and have a strong behavioral approach that works well for clients with anxiety, self-esteem issues, stress, relationship issues, sexuality, addictions, abuse, suicidal ideations, and trauma. While I am a great listener and create space for my clients to be heard and validated, I also assign homework assignments that help my clients gain a better understanding of themselves and their lives and I will challenge you to become the change you desire in your life.

I offer therapy in-person and online in both English and French and I also speak some Spanish. I have a flexible schedule and offer sessions during the day, evening, and weekend. I would be delighted to help support you in navigating a new direction in your life, helping you find more purpose, meaning, and connection to the world and the people you care about.

Jarret's Background:

One of the biggest things that sets me apart from most other counsellors and psychologists is that my journey as a mental health professional didn’t start early in my career. From a young age I took an interest in religion, spirituality, shamanism, and self-help and read hundreds of books on these subjects, unaware what important assets their knowledge would become to my work as a mental health practitioner later in life.

My undergraduate degrees include a Bachelor of Fine Arts in New Media (University of Lethbridge) and a Bachelor of Science in Geology (University of Calgary). I have a strong grasp of technology and have worked with and as, coders, artists, designers, and marketers. I’ve also worked in the Oil and Gas industry as a Geologist and Geophysicist and remain a Professional Consulting Geologist. I love the challenge of solving complex puzzles and analyzing difficult to understand data. My graduate degree is a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology (Hons.)(Yorkville University).

My life has afforded me many opportunities for travel, and I’ve taken the opportunity to embrace other cultures and learn all I could about humanity along the way. I’ve been gifted the opportunity to work with people of all walks of life, whether engineers, carpenters, bricklayers, roofers, scaffolders, artists, programmers, geophysicists, or marketers, and it always amazes me that no matter how different people are, we all have our humanity in common.

Therapeutically, I am very behavioral in my approach to treatment. I frequently incorporate Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Solution-Focused Therapy into my treatment plans. I also often draw interventions from narrative therapy, helping my clients to reframe and take charge of the story of their lives. I also believe in the power of emotion and understand how difficult it can be to process trauma and negative emotions that have been crystallized in difficult past experiences. I am strongly drawn to psychodynamic therapy, the unconscious, and dreams. I believe in being fluid about my approach to working with each client, recognizing that we are all different and have unique needs; there is no single approach to therapy and adapting my methods to what works best for the client.

Beyond therapy, I am an entrepreneur, a father, and a musician. I love working with my hands; I build and fix things, and love DIY projects. I am a life-long learner and continually strive to better myself.

I invite you to allow me to help you transmute your life and relationships into more loving and fulfilling experiences.

Sincerely,

Jarret
