Calgary-Psychologist-Kari-Adams

Welcome, I’m so glad you’re here! My name is Kari: I am a Registered Calgary Psychologist, and my focus is all things family. Family is the center of many people’s lives and is one of the biggest influences on how our templates of the world are shaped. While family can often be a place of love, safety, and refuge, it can also be a source of stress, conflict, or difficulty. For some people, family relationships can even be a source of trauma or significant adversity. If you’re struggling with conflict in your family, if behavior is changing, or a significant life change like a new child or a big move is happening, it can be helpful to get extra support. I also help support people who are seeking to process traumatic memories and their associated emotions and beliefs, whether the trauma stems from family interactions or elsewhere.

Kari's Background:

I am a long-time Calgarian, and have spent most of my career working in various non-profit organisations dedicated to improving people’s lives and addressing the challenges presented by experiences like mental health struggles, domestic violence, and family conflict. I have several years of experience supporting individuals and families with concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, parenting challenges, family struggles, stress and burnout, and life transitions. I draw on a variety of therapeutic modalities, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), family systems, narrative therapy, attachment theory, behaviour modification, and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT).

My aim is to help and support you and your family at every stage and phase of life; whether you are coping with the major life change of becoming a new parent, worried about your child’s behaviour, want to help support your teenager with their mental health struggles, or aim improve your relationships with your adult parents or children. I work with families, children, teenagers, and adults to help everyone find a new way forward. I am also a mom of twins, so am familiar with the ups and downs that come with being a parent.

My approach is grounded in empathy and non-judgment, and I respect where you are while helping you work toward where you want to be. In our sessions together, we will explore the strengths that have helped you along the way and the areas where you’re struggling. We’ll discuss what you’ve tried and what you want to try next, and we’ll work together to create a concrete plan to help you reach your goals. I believe it is important to get to know someone as a whole person: who you are outside of your struggles, and what identities you hold in your relationships and interactions with the world..
I would love to talk to you and see how we can work together to help you grow into the person or family you want to be.

Please note that even if you are seeking counselling for your child individually, parents and caregivers can expect to be heavily involved in therapy, especially for children 12 years old and under.
