Calgary Psychologist - Kari Adams, R. Psych

Calgary-Psychologist-Kari-Adams

Welcome, I’m so glad you’re here! I am a Registered Psychologist and I work with individuals and families to help you heal from past traumas, improve relationships, manage stress, and enhance overall well-being.

I’ve been working in the helping field for the past 15 years, and have supported people with a variety of concerns including: trauma; anxiety; depression;  family challenges;  burnout; stress;  emotional regulation; self-esteem; and life changes. My approach to therapy is person-centred, trauma-informed and compassionate. I believe it is important to get to know someone as a whole person:  who you are outside of your struggles, and what identities you hold in your relationships and interactions with the world.  In our work together, we will explore what got you where you are today, while drawing on your unique strengths and resources in working towards the future you want.

I am trained in a type of trauma therapy called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) that can be used to address trauma-related conditions like PTSD, as well as a variety of other concerns, including depression and anxiety. I also have training and experience in Family Therapy, which allows me to work both with individuals who are seeking more insight into the family patterns that influenced their lives, as well with families who may be looking for new ways to solve problems, resolve conflicts, and create more adaptive patterns in their relationships with each other.

Kari's Background:

I am a long-time Calgarian, and have spent most of my career working in various non-profit organisations dedicated to improving people’s lives and addressing the challenges presented by experiences like mental health struggles, domestic violence, and family conflict. My work and volunteer experiences over the years solidified my decision to become a psychologist, and I graduated with a Masters of Counselling degree from the University of Calgary in 2017. I consider it an honour and a privilege to be a therapist and to hold space for people’s pain, joy, disappointments, and hopes.  One of the things I love the most about being a psychologist is that there is always something new to learn, and I am constantly striving to improve my knowledge and skills.

I believe that everyone’s experience in therapy should be unique to them as an individual or family, so I draw on a variety of therapeutic modalities including: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR); family systems; narrative therapy; attachment theory; behaviour modification; and dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) to collaborate on a plan that fits your unique needs and circumstances.

My aim is to help and support  you and your family at every stage and phase of life; whether you are a young adult facing the stress that can come with life transitions; a parent with concerns about you or your child’s well-being; an adult family wanting to improve your relationships with your parents or siblings;  or someone who wants to make sense of your past experiences to find a new way forward.

I would love to talk to you and see how we can work together to help you grow into the person or family you want to be.

Please note that even if you are seeking counselling for your child individually, parents and caregivers can expect to be heavily involved in  therapy, especially for children 12 years old and under.
